Sam Weller is a fictional character, not a local resident of Stoke. He is the loyal and witty servant of Mr. Pickwick in Charles Dickens's novel, The Pickwick Papers. The character is depicted as being inspired by the "Pickwick Papers", which was first published in 1837. Sam Weller was a boots employed at the White Hart Inn and eventually married Mary Nupkins.
